POETIC PRELUDE
White, Fitzgerald and Price form a strange company, but each presents a vision of life that goes beyond shoring up broken fragments, beyond tragedy; that transcends the ashes of the early poetry of Eliot; that echoes the song of unity in Whitman; that has its feet solidly in an everyday reality like William Carlos Williams, yet reaches for that transcendence like our Emily . -Ron Price, A Comment on Some Poets of the First Decade of the Forth Epoch, 26 June 1995.
White got in early
and was all set by 1986
when the 4th epoch got underway.
It was a good thing
‘cause it was all over for him
in 1993:got a taste of the Holy Year.
Fitzgerald was turning out
delightful little booklets
in the early years of this epoch:
four by 1990 and more since, I hear.
Price had yet to publish anything
except the occasional poem
like dozens of others
around this Baha’i world
of promises, prayers, unending pieties
and glorious prognostications.
Their voice was gentle,
with some solid, meaty bits,
in a world turning more
to an audio-visual extravaganza,
to doing things;
but here was a voice,
however distant,
however part of the wilderness.
These were the quiet days
before a Lesser Peace process
would witness an entry-by-troops.
The voice of the Baha’i world
and its poets was still quiet.
This was the silence before the war;
the energy was building,
slowly building, the prelude.
