WAITING TO GRADUATE

And the true realism, always and everywhere, is that of the poets: to find out where joy resides, and give it a voice...For to miss the joy is to miss all.
-Robert Louis Stevenson in Christopher Isherwood: Where Joy Resides, Don Bechardy and James White, eds., Methuen, London, 1989, p.v.

All that energy; it’s been piling up
for one hundred and fifty years.
You’ve got to give it something to do,
some expression, some outlet, channel,
or it will simply burst. How to manage
this energy has been keeping us busy
for a long time: not-too-enthusiastic,
not-too-active, frenetically sitting alone.

Have you tried letterboxing or postering?
Why I think I must have put up fifty thousand,
put them in, thousands, up-and-down streets
in so many towns I’ve lost count.
I still do it occasionally for nostalgia,
to keep the oils flowing, but I do it like
an old veteran, with a casualness that
has none of the enthusiasm that used
to be in my step. I say, this is for
the energies of youth, this is to give
them something to do in the big cities,
part of the project: 3 hours and 2000
on a hot day on the south side of town;
or postering all the delis from Smith Street
to East Fifty-First.

Look man! I’ve graduated after thirty-three years!
I’m into writing poetry on a hot day,
endless meetings and besides everyone
can’t do everything and I’m doing other things.
I can’t believe it that noone will put up the posters!
Here I am putting up posters and me 51 years old
and getting a little thin, a little too insouciant,
as routine as that fish and chip store;
that sticky-tape still goes down fast:
who wants to hang around a greasy-spoon
when it’s 100 degrees in the shade?
When, oh when will I really graduate?
