Various views to explore concerning women in -Heart of Darkness- All relate to Marlow's lie
Bode, Rita. “‘They…should be out of it’: The Women of Heart of Darkness.” Conradiana: A Journal of Joseph Conrad Studies. 26 (1994): 20-34.
In this essay, it is suggested that the women in Heart of Darkness represent a “powerful female network.” Furthermore, Conrad suggests that the influences of women are key motivations for the presence of men and their behaviors in the African Congo. Marlow’s lie, the complementary effect of the Intended and the African Woman, and Kurtz’s oil sketch are interpreted as relevant examples.
Hyland, Peter. “The Little Women in the Heart of Darkness.” -Conradiana: A Journal of Joseph Conrad Studies-. 20 (1988): 3-11.
Hyland suggests that Marlow’s portrayal of women reflects anti-feminist stereotypes typical of a patriarchal society. It is further argued that this inferior view of women is founded on contempt. Emphasis is given to the implications of Marlow’s lie.
Land, Stephen K. -Paradox and Polarity in the Fiction of Joseph Conrad-. New York: St. Martin’s P, 1984.
Land traces the structural development, within a recurring framework, of Conrad’s novels. A section, devoted to Heart of Darkness, explains the role of women by defining the Intended as the anti-heroine and the African Woman as the heroine.
Sedlak, Valerie F. “‘A World of Their Own’: Narrative Distortion and Fictive Exemplification in the Portrayal of Women in Heart of Darkness.” -CLA Journal: Official Quarterly Publication of the College Language ociation-. 32 (1988): 443-465.
Sedlak argues that Conrad makes a major thematic statement through Marlow’s misrepresentation of women compared to their actual experience or example. Sedlak erts that Marlow’s lie should be reevaluated. One reason given is that Marlow comes to realize through his meeting with the Intended that her world is hardly beautiful as he had before umed.
